ST3 featuresThe load

Change the load, and the result changes with it

Marksman ST3 reads a shotgun shot as one of 12,600 combinations of pellet, size, speed, charge, and choke. Rifle and handgun shots use 235 calibers and 4,700+ bullet profiles. A different cartridge is a different result, the way it is outside. The calculator is built from empirical tests and from the published work of Ed Lowry and John Harradine with the BASC.

What you can train

  1. 01

    Same bird, different cartridge

Compare lead and steel on one presentation before you trust the swap in the field.

  2. 02

    Steel slows faster

A steel pellet of the same number can arrive without enough energy. A larger steel size can recover it, with a different pattern.

  3. 03

    Rifle data

Rifle and handgun placement uses the cartridge you actually shoot, including the drop at that distance.

What you see

  1. 01

    Impact, not a sticker

Hit position sits against the target path, the choke, and the pellet or bullet. It is not a marker dropped on the picture.

  2. 02

    An insufficient shot stays insufficient

A placement that would not carry a clean shot is shown as an insufficient shot.

Realism, safety, ethics

The point is to practice a load that is fair to the animal. Collecting breaks with a cartridge that fails at that range is the wrong lesson.

Questions

How many shotgun ballistic combinations does Marksman ST3 include?

The shotgun screen is 12,600 combinations of pellet, size, speed, charge, and choke. Rifle and handgun shots use a separate library: 235 calibers and 4,700+ bullet profiles.

Does ST3 treat steel shot differently from lead?

Yes. Steel slows faster than lead. The same nominal size can arrive with too little energy, and a larger steel size changes both energy and pattern. An under-powered hit is shown as an insufficient shot.

Where does this ballistic data come from?

From empirical tests and from the published work of Ed Lowry and John Harradine with the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).

The rest of the system

Figures are published Marksman ST3 specifications: 0.18 MOA tracking, about 1 ms from shot to screen, 235 calibers, 4,700+ rifle and handgun profiles, and 12,600 shotgun combinations.
